On the afternoon of March 28, 2024, Zhou Fei, Associate Professor at the International Exchange Center of the University of Tsuru in Japan, visited our school and delivered a distinguished lecture titled “The ‘Pre-Language’ Field in Modern Novels: A Case Study of the ‘Second Night’ in Natsume Sōseki’s Ten Nights of Dreams”. The event was part of the Northwest University School of Foreign Languages Distinguished Lecture Series. Dean Cao Ruonan welcomed Professor Zhou, and the lecture was hosted by associate professor Zhang Ziru from the Japanese Department. Faculty and students from the Japanese Department attended the lecture.

Professor Zhou introduced the philosophical concept of “pre-language” and conducted an in-depth analysis of the short story “Second Night” from Natsume Sōseki’s Ten Nights of Dreams, further examining the narrative structure through concepts such as narrator and viewpoint. He also explored the potential developments at the story’s conclusion. Throughout the lecture, Professor Zhou engaged with the audience, explaining complex academic concepts in an accessible way, which sparked great interest among students. In the discussion session, faculty and students actively participated, and professor Zhou patiently answered all their questions.

This lecture offered a fresh perspective and approach to studying Natsume Sōseki’s works and modern Japanese literature. The application of the “pre-language” concept in literary analysis was especially thought-provoking and inspiring for the faculty and students of the Japanese Department.
